Overview
Excess skin around the eyelids, referred to dermatochalasis, is caused by a weakening of connective tissue and loss of skin elasticity as we age. More commonly seen in the upper eyelids, dermatochalasis can affect the lower eyelids as well.
Excess skin in the upper eyelids may lead to decreased peripheral vision from the drooping tissues resting on your eyelashes, known as “hooding.” Dermatochalasis may also cause a ‘heavy’ or ‘tired’ feeling around your eyes or interfere with central vision due to droopy lids or lashes obscuring your vision.
During your consultation, Dr. Munroe will assess the excess skin around your eyelids, the amount of fat causing any puffiness, and the position of your eyebrows. Dr. Munroe will then review the best treatment options with you.

Treatment
During a procedure known as blepharoplasty, excess skin is removed through an incision in the natural crease of your eyelid. The procedure is usually done in an outpatient setting.
