Benefits of Valeda Therapy

Until recently, the standard management for Dry AMD has been limited to home monitoring and AREDS vitamin supplementation. Valeda uses Photobiomodulation (PBM)—specific wavelengths of yellow, red, and near-infrared light—to stimulate the mitochondria (the "powerhouses") of your retinal cells

  • Improved Vision: Patients may experience an improvement in visual acuity
  • Disease Management: Clinical trials have shown that Valeda can slow the progression of the disease and reduce the buildup of drusen (waste deposits in the eye).
  • Minimally-Invasive: No surgery or dilation of the pupils is required during treatment.

Am I a Candidate?

Valeda is specifically designed for patients in the early to intermediate stages of Dry AMD. Our doctors will determine if you are a candidate based on:

  • Diagnosis: You must have a confirmed diagnosis of Dry AMD in the eye being treated (not the "Wet" form).
  • Vision Level: It is most effective for patients who still have functional central vision (typically between 20/32 and 20/70).
  • Medical History: Patients with a history of light-sensitive disorders (like light-triggered migraines) or those on photosensitizing medications may not be eligible.

What to Expect During Treatment

The treatment is quick, painless, and performed right in our office.

  • The Session: You will sit comfortably in front of the Valeda device. Each session lasts less than 5 minutes per eye. No dilation of the pupils is required.
  • The Sensation: The light is bright but gentle. You may experience a temporary "afterimage" (like the spot you see after a camera flash), which typically fades within a few minutes.
  • The Schedule: A standard treatment cycle consists of 9 sessions delivered over 3 to 5 weeks (usually 3 times per week).
  • No Downtime: You can drive yourself home and resume normal activities immediately following your appointment.
  • Maintenance: To maintain the health of your retinal cells, maintenance cycles are typically recommended every 4 to 6 months.

Cost and Insurance

Valeda is a new, cutting-edge technology that is now being covered under some insurance plans.
